Caserta

with its Palace nicknamed “the little Versailles” the construction of which was done by Carlo of Borbone (better known as Charles III of Spain) who commissioned the Neapolitan Architect who was of Dutch origin Luigi Vanvitelli, the laying of the first stone came about on 20 January 1752.  
On the death of Luigi Vanvitelli in 1773 the Palace was totally completed, it was his son Charles who completed the building.  
The Palace consists 1.200 rooms with 1.742 windows, a chapel and a theatre.  Not to be missed is the visit to the royal apartments which are reached climbing the “Scalone d’Onore” (the stairs of honour) which presents itself as a big ramp which then divides into two parallel elements, the 116 steps are composed individually of one block of “lumachella di trapani” born to be the culminating space of the whole building, visit the splendid park of the Palace with its English garden.  The park protected by Unesco as human patrimony, is a continual succession of views, water games and waterfalls.  A wonderful work of art that attributes the Palace of Caserta one of the most beautiful in the world.  To visit the park and gardens it is possible to rent bicycles or pedoloes, asking at the ticket office or catching the bus that is in service only for the visit of the park.

The visit to Caserta isn’t complete without a visit to the splendid old Caserta which has also been declared as a National Monument at 450 metres in height , it offers a splendid view as far as the Gulf of Naples, an ideal place for a picnic or romantic walks.  
Following the little roads, characteristic of the village, all of a sudden you find yourself immerged in a different era.  The final leg of the visit which must be done is to visit the small village of S.Leucio born from the will of Ferdinando IV who restored and transformed  il Belvedere for his family and the small community that lived within the walls, who also decided to start the manufacture of stockings and veils that existed in the area, from this came about the Real Colonia of San Leucio, the first social experiment based on the merit and equality, the houses which today are still lived in, were built in keeping with the urbanity of the time, all the houses were given running water and hygienic services.  Men and women enjoyed the same rights, private property didn’t exist and assistance to the old and ill were guaranteed.This Tour includes also Cassino.
