Founded by Saint Benedict in 592 and erected transforming a pagan temple into a monastery dedicated to Saint Martin. He lived in this sacred place until his death on 21 March 547 and here he wrote the Regula Monachorum and today the remains of the Saint together with those of Saint Scolastica are still under the High Altar.
