Two splendid archaeological sites that have been integrally restored, where you can immerge yourself in the daily life of the people of Pompei and Ercolano up until a few minutes before the eruption in 79 a.c covered everything for centuries with stone lava and ashes. The excavation work still continues today to bring these two cities with their treasures to the light.
go along Via dell’Abbondanza, visit the “Casa del Fauno” one of the most luxourious houses in Pompei, where the visitor is welcomed with HAVE written in policrome weave on the footpath in front of the front door or la “casa dei vettii” with its pomp depicted among the Amorini artists and masters which can be admired on the walls of the big dining room appearing eon the colonade. Visit the Foro baths, interesting for their elegant decoration and their excellent state of conservation of “calidarium” and “tepidarium” in the men’s section. The baths, in fact, were divided into men and women. Coming out of the Porta Ercolano, you go out to visit the Via dei Sepolcri, one of the necropolis of Pompei, with its tombs deposited on the sides of the road, until you reach the big Villa of Diomede. Continuing for another 200 mt you find then the Villa dei Misteri one of the most interesting buildings for its harmonious disposition of the environment and above all the pictorial decorations, visible in the maximum splendour in the “Sala del Grande Depinto” , where it is possible to admire the decoration which represents “L’iniziazione delle spose ai Misteri Dionisiaci” with the typical colour “rosso pompeiano” (red pompei). This Tour includes also Herculaneum.
the difference from Pompei is that it was submerged in mud ash and other eruptive material dragged by the rain water, which penetrating the inside of the same solidified all, rendering it a compact and hard unified strata. This has rendered it a more ardent excavation to bring to the light the archaeological relics but at the same time has consented the conservation of the highly perishable materials such as the papyrus, such as those found in a sanctuary villa still today partially covered, renamed “Villa dei Papiri” and in which have been found 1826 rolls of papyrus, containing above all Greek text. Numerous are the Villas that you can visit inside the archaeological site of Ercolano, there have also been found the human remains of 270 skeletons and a boat with its boatsman, animals amongst which a horse and a donkey. This discovery came about thanks to the excavations carried out in 1980 and has completely revolutionized the thought that at the moment of the eruption the people of ercolano did not escape towards Naples, but were directed towards the beach to try to find eventual hiding and there they were enveloped by the lava. This Tour includes also Pompeii.
