always having the same immortal profile, the physiognomy of Vesuvius has been altered during time. With the last eruption of 1944 the Vesuvius has lost its immortal cone which is in all the photos from the beginning of the 900’s and it has gained height. Today its crater has a diameter of almost 500 metres and has a depth of 230 metres from the lowest point of its border, which quota oscillates between 1150 and 1281 metres. On the southern side some chimneys of smoke are visible which emits gas at 80 degrees cent (whilst the degrees rose to 400 after the eruption of 1944) whilst on the eastern side the chimneys emit gas at 500 degree cent. Numerous are the footpaths to follow to admire the view and the lush vegetation, during the Spring period you are welcomed by the perfume of the broom. In fact the vegetation of the Vesuvius is vast, giving space to lava lichens and red valerian, tall trunk trees which are domestic pine, the oak which is particularly quick in its re-growth on the soil that was crossed by the fire. We also have to remember that in the Spring and Summer periods 23 species of wild orchids flower. This Tour includes Pompeii.
